FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LOCAL RUNNERS POUR IT ON TO WIN THE 'PIG'
TJ & PJ Take It All
Cincinnati, Ohio (May 2, 2004) - For the second year in a row, local Cincinnati runners take the top two divisions of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon. Winning the men's division was 37-year old T.J. Lentz of Clifton, and in the women's division, 25-year old P.J. Ball of Clifton. Lentz' winning time was 2:38:07, and Ball's was 3:05:52.
Second in the men's division was 35-year old Thomas Yakowenko of Metuchen, New Jersey in a time of 2:43:29, and third was 29-year old Jonathan Sieber of Birmingham, Michigan. His time was 2:44:05.
Runner up in the women's division was 34-year old Leslie Dorado of Columbus in a time of 3:07:41, and third was 38-year old Laurie Davis of Cincinnati in 3:10:27.
Under cloudy skies and a steady drizzle, the Flying Pig Marathon drew a record field of 11,928 for the weekend activities. Last year's winners, John Aerni and Lisa Veneziano, both from the Cincinnati area, did not return to defend their titles. Aerni is teaching in Alaska and Veneziano is expecting her second child.
Of the five wheelchair racers who registered, two started the race but both ended together at mile 15 because of weather conditions.
"Even with the challenging weather conditions, we had our largest registered field for the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon," said Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director. "We salute all of the runners, walkers and spectators who braved the weather for the race."
Lentz, a graduate of Wittenburg University, has run the 'Pig' before in the relay division, but this was the first time he had run the full marathon. "It was a last minute decision to enter," said Lentz. "I decided in the middle of the week because of my training, this was a good opportunity to run."
P.J. Ball is a graduate of McCauley High School and is a graduate student at the University of Cincinnati. She is a veteran of local races, and won the 15K women's heart mini-marathon earlier this year. This was her second 'Pig.' Her previous appearance in this Marathon was in 2002, when she placed fifth.
"The course and support was terrific all along the route," said Ball. "The weather didn't really affect me."
The marathon field today included 4,802 marathon runners, 510 marathon walkers, 3,672 relay runners, and 1,503 for the 10K. Saturday's activities included 811 for the new 5K and 625 for the Piglet fun run.
